Scan Tool Microprocessor Updates

*Only applies to non-CAN scan tools with serial number below OBD-006-500. CAN Scan Tools are software updateable through the DiagScan program.

The scan tool has a replaceable microprocessor to facilitate updating the firmware. Updates may be used to add new functionality to your scan tool or may enhance the operation of current functions. This procedure requires disassembling your scan tool and replacing the microprocessor. Updates are $5 + S&H. Buy It

If you do not wish to perform this yourself, you can ship your scan tool to us and we will update the microprocessor for you at no additional charge.

Version History:
Current firmware version may be checked by looking in the Utilities - Scanner Data tab while the scan tool is connected to a vehicle.

v1.21    Initial Release
v1.22    Beta Release to add Chrysler SCI adapter support
v1.23    Final Release of Chrysler SCI. Updated ISO 14230 to automatically detect slow initialization type.

There are two styles of scan tool cases as shown below.

For units with New Style Case use the following procedure:

Carefully insert small screwdriver in one of the unlock tabs in the side of the case and turn gently to open. It is not necessary to remove the side case label, open from other side and let the halves hinge on the label.

Carefully remove board from the case

The microprocessor is the only socketed IC on the board
Note the orientation of the IC in the socket (The dimple in the end of the chip is facing left in picture)
Carefully remove the microprocessor IC
Insert the new IC into the socket making sure all pins are correctly aligned and IC is fully seated in socket.
Double check the IC orientation
Install board into top of case first taking care to insert LEDs into the holes in the case
Re-assemble case snapping together to close

For units with Old Style Case use the following procedure:

Remove 4 Screws from back of case

Carefully remove top of case

The microprocessor is the only socketed IC on the board
Note the orientation of the IC in the socket (The dimple in the end of the chip is facing up in picture)
Carefully remove the microprocessor IC
Insert the new IC into the socket making sure all pins are correctly aligned and IC is fully seated in socket.
Double check the IC orientation
Re-assemble case
