The CAN, VPW and PWM protocols implement the scan tool interface directly in to the vehicle network. As a result, messages are constantly being sent between the many controllers in the vehicle. These messages can be listened to by the OBD-II Diagnostic Scanner and decoded as to what controller address sent the message and where is was directed. This can be useful in troubleshooting since a controller with a problem will try to report it to the other controllers on the network. If you see high network traffic or see a lot of traffic from one controller, there may be a problem.
